Crew News & Notes - April 19
On the heels of its record-setting fourth consecutive shutout, a 1-0 win over Sporting KC last Saturday night, the Crew (2-1-2, 8 pts.) visits Eastern Conference-rival Toronto FC (1-2-3, 6 pts.) for the first leg of the 2011 Trillium Cup at BMO Field, this Saturday, April 23, at 4 p.m.
The match will be televised live regionally on ONN with Dwight Burgess and Duncan Oughton calling all the action. The game can be heard in English on News/Talk 610 WTVN and on-line at TheCrew.com, with Neil Sika behind the microphone, and in Spanish on La Mega 103.1, with Carlos Cordova and Benny Pietrangelo on the call.
The Crew will host a viewing party this Saturday (April 23) at Jimmy V’s Grill and Pub (1 S State St, Westerville, OH 43081), the third stop in the Crew’s new Pub Watch Party Tour presented by Budweiser. Everyone is encouraged to join their fellow Crew fans and have a chance to win some great Crew prizes.
Toronto FC is coming off a 3-0 loss at D.C. United last Saturday and will look to bounce back against its Eastern Conference-rival. It is led by MLS veteran Alan Gordon, who has scored two goals so far this season.
The Black & Gold enters the match in a three-way tie for second place in the East with New York and Houston. It is unbeaten in its last four games (2-0-2), all of which have been shutouts. The Crew is still undefeated against Toronto FC with a record of 5-0-6. Goalkeeper William Hesmer, who scored the game-tying goal in a 2-2 draw at BMO Field last season, stands to break the Crew franchise record for consecutive scoreless minutes (373), as well as extend his club-record consecutive (4) and career (37) shutouts.
The Trillium cup is an annual competition between the two teams, named after the trillium, which is both the official flower of the Canadian province of Ontario, and the official wildflower of the U.S. state of Ohio. The rivalry draws on the teams’ similarities and proximity. Both teams are geographically near the Great Lakes that border the United States and Canada and both teams also play in soccer-specific stadium that have been built in the central city, as opposed to other MLS clubs that have built their stadium mainly in the suburbs. The return leg of this two-match home-and-home aggregate-score series will be at Crew Stadium on Saturday, September 10, at 7:30 p.m.
Next up, the Crew returns to Columbus for a two-game home-stand. It will host Vancouver’s first-ever visit to Crew Stadium on April 30 and welcome back Western Conference-foe Seattle Sounders FC on May 7. Both matches will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
