Federico Higuain added five corner kicks last weekend to his totals as the club’s primary corner kick taker. In 16 career appearances for the Crew, Higuain has recorded 52 total corner kicks and sits four corner kicks behind John Harkes (56 CK in 29 GP) for the number 10 spot on the club’s all-time list. Crew boss Robert Warzycha is the club’s all-time corner kicks leader with 503 in 160 games played.
The Black & Gold have suffered 50 fouls through three games this season, which ranks third in MLS behind Sporting KC (58) and Portland (52). The team suffered 13 fouls last weekend against San Jose and now averages 16.67 fouls suffered per match. Last year, the team suffered 393 fouls in the 34-game season, averaging 11.56 fouls suffered per match.
Columbus has been whistled for off side just twice this season, the fewest off side calls against in MLS. It’s early in the season, but the team’s average of 0.67 off side calls against-per-game is a notable improvement as the team finished second in MLS for most off side calls with 111 in 2012, or 3.26 off side-per-game.
Through three games this season, D.C. United has shut out its opponents twice while the Crew has scored in each of its three games, averaging 1.67 goals per game. Last year, Columbus was held scoreless eight times, including three of the team’s first seven fixtures. While the Crew has scored five goals through 2013, D.C. has scored just one goal in three matches.
Crew ‘keeper Andy Gruenebaum made four saves in Opening Match at Crew Stadium last weekend against San Jose. Through three games as the primary netminder, the 30-year-old has seven saves, good for a tie with Toronto’s Joseph Bendik for ninth in MLS. D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid leads MLS in saves with 13 in three starts.
