The expansion from 68 to 80 teams in this year's tournament field includes both the largest number of amateur teams (42) in the tournament proper – exceeding the previous record of 34 set last year – as well as the largest contingent of pro clubs (38, surpassing last year's record of 34), with all Division I, II and III professional sides participating for a third consecutive year. An additional record for the competition saw 24 Second Round matches played, exceeding the previous high of 18 in a single round (2013 First Round).
The Crew was crowned 2002 U.S. Open Cup champion as the Black & Gold defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 to win the club’s first-ever tournament title in front of its home fans at Crew Stadium on October 24, 2002. The Black & Gold also reached the Open Cup Final in the club’s first appearance in the tournament in 1998 and most recently in 2010.
