Revolution Acadamy Update: February 24, 2010

The New England Revolution Under-16 and Under-18 youth teams opened their 2010 seasons with a trip to Connecticut last weekend to play South Central Premier on Saturday and Oakwood Soccer Club on Sunday. The travel weekend proved to be a mixed bag as both the U-16s and U-18s defeated South Central Premier on Saturday but dropped decisions to Oakwood Soccer Club on Sunday. The teams exit the first weekend of play with 1-1-0 records.

The U-16s opened play late Saturday morning on the University of Bridgeport’s Knight Field and defeated South Central Premier 3-2 on the strength of two goals from Felix DiBona (Everett, Mass.) and two assists from Devin Devoy (Lincoln, Mass.). SC Premier opened the scoring in the 10th minute, but the Revs answered quickly when Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.) found the back of the net on a pass from Adrian Reifsnyder (Newton, Mass.) in the 12th minute of play. DeBona then tallied two scores in the next ten minutes to give the Revs a two-goal lead. SC Premier added one more goal in the 28th minute, but did not capitalize the rest of the game.

The U-18s took Knight Field for a 1 p.m. tilt and shut out SC premier, 4-0. Jonni Ventura (Westminster, Mass.) led the scoring with consecutive goals in the 42nd and 45th minutes on assists from Michael Rincon (Malden, Mass.) and Miguel Castro (Lynn, Mass.). New England initially got on the board in the 26th minute when Gustavo Santos (Framingham, Mass.) found Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.) for a 1-0 lead and the Revs never looked back. Fabio Junior(Leominster, Mass.) closed out the scoring in the 85th minute when he netted an unassisted goal.

After a Saturday sweep, both teams traveled to Portland, Conn. to square off against Oakwood Soccer Club at the Oakwood Soccer Park on Sunday afternoon. The tables turned on the Revs as both squads recorded shutout losses. The U-16s surrendered an early goal in the 15th minute that proved to be all the scoring Oakwood SC needed to preserve the 1-0 shutout. The U-18s followed with a valiant effort, but surrendered at late goal in the 80th minute and also dropped a 1-0 decision.

Both the U-16s and U-18s look climb back above .500 this Saturday when they take on FC Westchester at SUNY Purchase in New York.
