Crew acquires draft pick from Houston

Jason Garey

The Columbus Crew announced today that it has acquired the Houston Dynamo’s natural 4th round pick in the 2015 SuperDraft in exchange for the rights to forward Jason Garey. Per club and league policy, no further terms of the deal were disclosed.

Garey, 26, was selected by the Crew in the first round (No. 3 overall) of the 2006 MLS SuperDraft. During his five-season tenure, he started 40 of the 83 games in which he saw action, notching 15 goals and recording six assists. He was a member of teams that won two Supporters’ Shields (2008, 2009) and an MLS Cup championship (2008).

“This is a good move for me,” the Gonzales, La., native said. “I have enjoyed a lot of success in the five years I spent in Columbus and I am thankful to the Crew for starting my professional career, but it is time to move on. I want to thank the fans, my teammates and the organization for everything they have done for me during my time here. I also want to thank the organization for being accommodating of my wishes and helping make this happen. I look forward to beginning my new adventure in Texas.”

Garey came to the Crew in 2006, following a stellar career at the University of Maryland, where he won the NCAA Men’s College Cup and the MAC Hermann Trophy in 2005.

Founded by American sports pioneer Lamar Hunt, the Columbus Crew is Ohio's Major League Soccer club, anchoring a diverse sports and entertainment enterprise. One of the league's Charter Members, it won its first MLS Cup championship in 2008 and has also won the 2002 U.S. Open Cup and MLS Supporters’ Shield titles in 2004, 2008 and 2009. It recently completed its 15th season overall and 12th in first-of-its-kind Columbus Crew Stadium.
