Crew signs defender Kwaku Nyamekye

The Columbus Crew announced today that it has signed defender Kwaku Nyamekye to a multi-year contract. Per club and league policy, no further terms of the deal were disclosed.

A 6-1 23-year-old, Nyamekye was selected by the Crew in the fourth round (No 60 overall) of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft but didn’t report to the club until he graduated from Harvard University last May. He has trained with the Black & Gold off-and-on since then.

“Kwaku is a good player who we got a good look at last year and brought back this year,” said Crew head coach Robert Warzycha. “We needed to add depth in that central position in the back and he is a player who can provide it for us.”

At Harvard, Nyamekye started 71 of the 73 matches in which he appeared. He scored 11 goals and recorded six assists during his four years at the famed Ivy League institution. During his college career he was a three-time NSCAA All-Northeast Region Selection and was voted All-Ivy League all four years.

The Swiss defender of Ghanian descent went to the International School of Geneva where he was a five-year letter winner in both soccer and basketball.
