MLS Power Rankings: Week 17

William Hesmer

The jockeying atop the Power Rankings keeps getting better and better. After a brief, one-week stint at No. 1, FC Dallas dropped back a spot on the heels of a loss at Real Salt Lake, while both RSL and the Seattle Sounders kept pace with the best in the league.

They showed depth and toughness all over the pitch, which is important with a loaded schedule (USOC, CONCACAF Champions League, World Football Challenge) coming up over the next couple of months. Gotta wonder if there’s room for another forward, though — the Ángel/Barrett/López threesome have scored just eight times all year.

Last Week: Beat Chicago, 2-1(RECAP/WATCH)

This Week: Bye Next: July 20 vs. Columbus (10:30 pm, MatchDay Live)

Last Five: TWTTW

George John chose a bad time to lay an egg. With d-mid Daniel Hernandez getting a rest, the big man needed to be a leader; instead he had several unfortunate giveaways and perhaps his worst game in months. RSL punished them, but the good news for FCD is they have a chance for revenge in the USOC this week.

Last Week: Lost at RSL, 2-0 (RECAP/WATCH)

This Week: Saturday vs. D.C. Remember at the start of the year when some Seattle fans were wondering if the league had passed Sigi Schmid by? Emphatically, undeniable foolish speculation on their part. Welcome back! Yeah, RSL were going up against something less than a full-strength FCD, but they did what a good team should do: Find the weak points and go right at them. It’s officially halfway through the season and the Union still can’t put together consistent offense. It took a penalty save and a last-minute goal to seal a 1-0 win at Vancouver, but three points on the road is a plus no matter how you manage it.
