The Columbus Crew announced today that it has signed forward Aaron Schoenfeld after acquiring his rights from the Montreal Impact in exchange for a conditional pick in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft. Per club and league policy no further terms of the deal were disclosed. To make room for Schoenfeld on the roster, defender Rich Balchan has been placed on the disabled list.

A native of Knoxville, Tenn., and product of East Tennessee State University, the 6-4, 21-year-old was originally drafted by Montreal in the second round (No. 20 overall) of the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft. He finished his career at ETSU with 20 goals and 10 assists in 72 games.

“Aaron is a young talented forward with a lot of potential,” said Crew head coach Robert Warzycha. “He has a good touch and a good nose for the goal. He showed us that nothing is going to distract him from achieving his goals.”

While at ETSU, Schoenfeld received a series of accolades including Atlantic Sun First Team All Conference and Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team honors as a junior and senior, as well as A-Sun All-Academic Honors all four years of his collegiate career. He was also named to the NSCAA First Team All-South Region his senior year and Second Team his junior year.

“I’m really excited for the opportunity,” Schoenfeld said. “I found a fit here with Columbus. I enjoy the team and the city and I think it is going to be a great season.”
