The Columbus Crew announced today that both goalkeeper William Hesmer and forward Tommy Heinemann have undergone microfracture surgery that will sideline them for extended periods of time.
Hesmer underwent the procedure on his right hip, which will keep him out of action for at least six months, while Heinemann’s, on his left knee, will require 9-12 months of rehabilitation. Hesmer had not yet seen action this season, while Heinemann played the final five minutes of the season opener at Colorado on March 10.
Hesmer, 30, is in his sixth season with the Crew and ninth in Major League Soccer. Following three seasons in Kansas City, in which he appeared in three games, he has become the most prolific goalkeeper in Crew history, topping the club’s career lists in games played (130), wins (59), shutouts (41) and saves (412).
Heinemann, who will turn 25 later this month, is in his fourth professional season and second with the Crew. After spending two years in the United Soccer Leagues and NASL, with Charleston and Carolina, he was signed by the Black & Gold prior to last season and became an effective contributor, scoring three goals and adding an assist in 28 games (12 starts).
