Down to 10 men after Josh Williams was sent off in the 68th minute, the Crew would have been relieved to come away with a point from Philadelphia as the score stood at 1-1 heading into stoppage time. But in a last stitch effort deep into the five minutes added, goalkeeper Matt Lampson's goal kick up to Eddie Gaven, who flicked it on to Federico Higuaín kickstarted the sequence that would ultimately result in Justin Meram sliding a pass in front of the goal mouth past Union 'keeper Zach MacMath to an open Gaven in front of net for the game winner. Here is Gaven's take on his late strike:
"I was just so tired, to be honest. It was just such a good feeling to be able to get that winning goal for the team. Everybody worked so hard tonight, they put so much into this game. Even though we had to go through a lot in this game, obviously with going down a man, to still come out of here in a game that-- we didn't need to win. per say, but was a game that would really help us-- to be able to get a win here is huge playing on the road."
To be fair, if the 1-1 result held, Josh Williams' first career goal, after many previous chances earlier in the season were denied by either the woodwork or referees, would have been the Moment of the Match. To still give Williams some credit, here is the defender describing the emotions of watching in the locker room after being sent off:
"If there were cameras in [the locker room], people would be laughing. I was going crazy. There were a lot of ups and downs. When [the Crew] had the ball right in front of the net, and as soon as [Gaven] scored, I was jumping around and going nuts. It was definitely a bunch of ups and downs as far as emotions go. It was pretty wild being in here by myself."
