Major League Soccer announced its Re-Entry process eligible player list on Monday. Several names on the list could fill some of the holes left by the Crew's recent roster moves so far this offseason, mainly along the backline. The front office would also like to bring in a proven scoring threat off the bench in 2013. Here are a few options the Crew could consider.
Marvell Wynne - DEF
The speedy former Colorado Rapids defender can play centerback or either outside back position. His seven years of MLS experience could be a valuable asset to a Crew defensive corps that currently consists of a handful of players. The downside of selecting Wynne is his high salary. Because of his high price tag, the UCLA product is much more likely to be chosen in Stage 2 on December 14 when teams can negotiate new contracts with Re-Entry prospects.
Maicon Santos - FWD
The Brazilian striker ignited the D.C. United attack early in 2012, scoring seven goals in the first three months of the season. However, Santos didn't find the net after May 26. Santos earns a reasonable, budget-friendly salary, but having played for four MLS clubs since 2009 could be a red flag for the Crew.
Ike Opara - DEF
With Victor Bernardez and Jason Hernandez slotted to be San Jose's centerback tandem for the forseeable future, Opara could benefit from a change of scenery. Opara has shown promise in limited playing time over the past three seasons and could help to settle the Crew's backline woes. Under a Generation adidas contract in 2013, Opara's current deal could be more than Columbus is willing to pay.
Alejandro Moreno - FWD
The veteran striker's option was not picked-up by Chivas USA, and could be a sentimental pick-up for the Crew. While he is due for a five percent pay increase, Columbus could opt to bring back the 2008 MLS Cup winner to ride into the sunset of his playing career. Moreno scored 20 goals in three seasons for the Black & Gold before heading to Philadelphia in the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft.
