Mendes opts to play for hometown Cosmos

Carlos Mendes

The New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League announced on Tuesday that the club has signed defender Carlos Mendes. Out of contract after playing the 2012 season with the Crew, Technical Director Brian Bliss hoped to re-sign the veteran for 2013. Ultimately, the Mineola, New York native decided that home is where the heart is.

“While we’re disappointed to see him go, we respect Carlos’ desire to be closer to home and near his family,” said Bliss. “He’s a true professional and we wish him the best of luck moving forward.”

Mendes started 12 games for the Black & Gold in 2012, providing leadership and a veteran presence to the Crew locker room in his only season with the club. Despite missing 22 games due to hamstring and ankle injuries, Columbus was 7-2-3 with Mendes in the starting lineup in 2012.

The Cosmos are set to play their first professional season since 1985 when the NASL Fall Championship season begins in 2013.
