Crew sign three to bolster 2013 roster

COLUMBUS — The Columbus Crew has signed midfielders Konrad Warzycha and Shawn Sloan, as well as defender Kyle Hyland to its roster, the club announced Wednesday. Per Major League Soccer and club policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed. These additions move the Crew’s signed roster total to 29 players heading into the 2013 MLS season.

“We’re pleased to welcome Konrad, Shawn and Kyle to our club,” said Crew Technical Director Brian Bliss. “All three players worked very hard in preseason training camp to make the roster, and they provide depth and quality at several positions.”

Warzycha joins the Crew after two seasons with Sporting Kansas City. The Dublin, Ohio native played four years for the Ohio State University, helping the Buckeyes to an appearance in the 2007 NCAA College Cup Final as a freshman before spending the past two years with MLS rival Sporting. Warzycha missed time during his rookie season due to injury, but returned in 2012 to help Sporting in its Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup-winning campaign. The 23-year-old midfielder is the oldest of Head Coach Robert Warzycha’s three children.

Selected 66th overall in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft in January, Sloan comes to Columbus following four seasons as an All-Big South First Team honoree at High Point University. During his college career, Sloan scored 24 goals and assisted on 27 others. The midfielder was honored as the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2011 and 2012.

A native of Bay Village, Ohio, Hyland signs his first professional contract after four successful years at IUPUI. Hyland scored 10 goals and notched 10 assists for the Jaguars in 72 matches, including eight tallies in 2012. A Crew Soccer Academy product, Hyland featured on the 2010 USL Super-20 and McGuire Cup-winning sides for Crew Juniors.
