Making the Case: Goal of the Year Part Two

Ben Speas

To celebrate 2013 Goal of the Year voting, Crew players and staff reflect on the nominated strikes.

March 23 at D.C. United - Speas dedicates first career goal to Urso

What they said:

Ben Speas: “I knew there was a scrum in the box when the ball was played in and I just kind of hung around at the top of the box hoping for what ended up happening. The defender slid it out and it popped right to me and I wanted to just hit through the ball with my laces and luckily it went past the goalie. It was great to get the first one that way at D.C. - the place where we found out about Kirk [Urso’s passing]. I knew the first goal was going to go to Kirk. It meant a lot to me and I will never forget it.”

Ryan Finley – “Kirk was my roommate in residency with the National Team when I was younger. I didn’t get a chance to play with him here, but obviously he means a lot to the team and is a pretty impactful person to this day. That was a pretty special moment for the team.”

April 14 at Montreal Impact - Oduro's stunning, left-footed volley earns Black & Gold a road point

What they said:

Matt Lampson: “The Goal of the Year is definitely Dom at Montreal. The touch on that ball, the fact that it was left-footed, and where he put it was unreal.”

Dom Oduro: “It is going to be one of my best MLS goals ever. In this shot I really wanted to hit it one time, but [Hassoun] Camara was right in front of me so I just settled the ball to my left foot and – instinctively – I just hit it. It’s just priceless to take that left foot and hit it upper ’90. I’ll take that goal any day.”
