  • Began his 18-year career as a professional soccer player at the age of 21 when he left the University of North Carolina to sign with FC Zwolle in Holland


  • Earned 44 caps with the United States Men’s National Team and was on the squad for the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups
  • Made almost 200 appearances across seven seasons in Germany and captained both Energie Cottbus and 1860 Munich
  • Was voted second-best defender in SC Cambuur (Holland) history, named to the Energie Cottbus (Germany) All-Time Best XI


  • Returned to Major League Soccer in 2009 and played for the LA Galaxy for three seasons, where he served as a player-coach under Bruce Arena during his final campaign


  • In his final season of professional soccer, played with Crew Brand Ambassador Frankie Hejduk in Los Angeles as the Galaxy went on to win MLS Cup 2011


  • Became the first American club manager within a top-ranked European federation and helped improve Swedish side Hammarby IF from 12th place to fourth place during his time in charge
