Giancarlo Gonzalez and Costa Rica provided an early memorable result from Brazil, stunning 2010 semifinalist Uruguay by a 3-1 final in Fortaleza.


Uruguay went ahead 1-0 on a penalty by Edinson Cavani, but the Ticos rallied for three unanswered goals, including two in a three-minute span to equalize and then take the lead. Joel Campbell scored in the 54th minute and Oscar Duarte scored in the 57th.


Marcos Urena added an insurance goal in the 84th minute, sealing the victory for Costa Rica.


Gonzalez played all 90 minutes in central defense, notching two shots. He narrowly missed scoring on a diving header in the 43rd minute and was active on set pieces all match long.
