Crew signs midfielder Mohammed Saeid

The Columbus Crew announced today that it has signed midfielder Mohammed Saeid (pronounced: SIGH-eed). Per club and MLS policy, additional details of the deal were not disclosed. The midfielder’s contract with Örebro SK from the top division in Sweden is set to expire in December and the product of England’s West Bromwich Albion’s youth Academy and BK Forward in Sweden will officially be added to the Black & Gold roster on January 1, 2015, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa.

“We’re excited to add Mohammed to the roster and we feel his versatility, history of success and experience at a high level at such a young age makes him extremely valuable for the club,” said Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. “He’s a very technical player and he fits the mold of what we’re looking for in the central midfield position. Signing him was a result of him being scouted live in Sweden and we felt like he’s a great addition moving forward.”

Since joining Örebro SK, Saeid, 23, has played a major role in the club’s resurgence over the past two seasons. During his second season at the club in 2013, Saeid scored four goals in 24 appearances to help Örebro earn promotion to the First Division. Saeid then played a major role in Örebro’s successful return to the top division, appearing in 20 games and contributing two goals in the top flight, where the club currently sits in sixth place (12-10-7, 43 points) with one match to play in the season.

A possession-based central midfielder, Saeid moved from BK Forward's youth setup to West Bromwich Albion's in 2002. He played eight years in the Baggies' Academy before moving back to the senior team at BK Forward. He spent three seasons there, including a stellar 2011 where he scored a single-season career-best eight goals for the third-division side before moving to Örebro SK and the topflight club in 2012.

The Crew has solidified the three seed in the 2014 MLS Cup Playoffs as the club is set to host the first leg of the Eastern Conference Semifinals – a two-match series – when the second-seed New England Revolution comes to Crew Stadium on Saturday, November 1 at 4:00 p.m. ET. Time Warner Cable SportsChannel will broadcast the match regionally and the match is set to air nationally on the Univision Deportes Network.

Tickets for Saturday’s Eastern Conference Semifinal match at Crew Stadium are now on sale. Tickets for a potential Eastern Conference Final match in Columbus – should the Crew advance – are on sale now.

TRANSACTION: Mohammed Saeid agrees to sign with the Crew following the expiration of his contract with Örebro SK in December. He will officially be added to the Black & Gold roster on January 1, 2015, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa.
