Post-match quotes: Crew SC at San Jose

Emanuel Pogatetz SJvCLB

SPORTING DIRECTOR & HEAD COACH GREGG BERHALTER

On the loss:
“I think that the first half was okay. Even after we got the red card we managed to hang in there and still become dangerous and still keep the ball a little bit. The second half, particularly the start, wasn’t good enough and that’s disappointing. We had better intentions and we wanted to put up a better fight. To give up two goals in the first 15 minutes wasn’t good.”

On the red card:
“It obviously affected the game playing a man down. Our initial thought was we could compensate by moving Federico [Higuain] in the middle and I think for a time period that was okay. At half time, we wanted to go out and be difficult to break down. I think we conceded goals too easily.”

On positive takeaways:
”I don’t think there are many positives to take from the game to be honest. I think that we’ll learn from it, but there are not many positives to take from it.”

MIDFIELDER ETHAN FINLAY

On the loss:
“Obviously, the game kind of changed upside down when we had the red card, but we still had opportunities. The first 10 minutes of the second half we lost focus and they punished us for it.”

On the red card:
“It’s obviously disappointing. Mo [Saeid] is a smart player and he’s just trying to make a play on the ball. I think he knows it wasn’t a good decision, but we stand by him. He’s a great player and we move on to the next game.”

On positive takeaways:
“We finished out the first half. I think that was a positive. We showed a lot of heart. I think what we need to realize is that we have to bring the same intensity that we have in home games in away games. Our road trips have not been as successful as we had hoped. So this is a disappointing road result, but something we can turn around.”

DEFENDER & CAPTAIN MICHAEL PARKHURST

On the loss:
“We put ourselves in a tough spot obviously, but we came in at halftime and regrouped. We thought that we could hang in there, defend well and catch them maybe on the counter or come out of here at 0-0. It didn’t go according to plan. We gave up an early goal in the second half and then we were in trouble.”

On the red card:
“It was disappointing. [Saeid] was just a second late. We started the game slow and it was a result of that.”

On positive takeaways:
“We’ll take our positives from other games and look forward to having another home game next week.”
