Afful, Mensah advance to AFCON quarterfinals

Crew SC defenders Harrison Afful and Jonathan Mensah are advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations with the Ghana National Team. The Black Stars finished second in Group D with six points in three matches.


Egypt got the 1-0 win today at Stade de Port-Gentil in Gabon after scoring on a free kick in the 11th minute. The Pharaohs went on to win the group with seven points, while Mali and Uganda finished in the bottom two slots. Ghana defeated Uganda 1-0 last Tuesday and continued its winning ways with a 1-0 win over Mali on Saturday.


Afful and Mensah both started and played the full 90 for the Black Stars in today’s contest. According to ESPNFC, Ghana had 54 percent of the possession and took 11 shots, including two on frame.


The Black Stars will DR Congo next in the AFCON quarterfinals this Sunday, January 29 at 11 a.m. ET. The match is set to kick-off at Stade d’Oyem in Gabon.
