Following the 2017 Major League Soccer regular season and postseason, Columbus Crew SC announced its 2017 Team Awards — including the Acura Most Valuable Player, Golden Boot Winner, Defender of the Year, OhioHealth Humanitarian of the Year, Kirk Urso Heart Award and Crew SC Academy Player of the Year.
Ola Kamara defended his Crew SC Golden Boot Award by setting a new MLS career-high of 18 goals in the regular season, two more than his 16 tallies during last year’s campaign, finishing fifth in the MLS Golden Boot race.
Kamara’s 18 strikes this year tied Stern John’s 1998 goal output to put him at third place in Crew SC’s list of most goals scored during a single regular season. His streak of scoring in four consecutive matches tied for the third longest streak of the year, with only Diego Valeri (nine), David Accam (five) and Ignacio Piatti (five) scoring in more consecutive regular-season matches in 2017.
In 2017, Kamara tied Mike Magee's 2013 record of most teams scored against in a single regular season by scoring against 15 different teams: the Houston Dynamo, D.C. United, the Portland Timbers, Toronto FC, New York City FC, the New England Revolution, Seattle Sounders FC, the Montreal Impact, Real Salt Lake, the Chicago Fire, the LA Galaxy, FC Dallas, Sporting Kansas City and Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
The Norwegian forward continued to rise in Crew SC’s all-time regular-season scoring charts, and he now sits in eighth place with 34 goals scored in 59 regular-season appearances (53 starts) for the Black & Gold since the beginning of the 2016 MLS season.
Crew SC had a regular-season record of 10-3-4 in 2017 when Ola scored one or more goals.
