Following the 2017 Major League Soccer regular season and postseason, Columbus Crew SC announced its 2017 Team Awards — including the Acura Most Valuable Player, Golden Boot Winner, Defender of the Year, OhioHealth Humanitarian of the Year, Kirk Urso Heart Award and Crew SC Academy Player of the Year.
Federico Higuain had his best statistical season with Crew SC in 2017, scoring nine goals and providing 16 assists en route to being named the club’s Most Valuable Player for the third time in his career. Along the way, Pipa set a new personal career-high in assists while also becoming a member of the Black & Gold’s 40-40 Club.
The Argentine midfielder finished the season with 1,272 successful passes, the second-most for Crew SC behind only Wil Trapp’s 2,246 passes, while creating 69 goal-scoring chances, more than anyone else on the team. Higuain’s performances throughout the season earned him a spot on MLSSoccer.com’s Team of the Week on six occasions in 2017 (Weeks 4, 10, 14, 17, 29, 33), proving that at 33 he’s as influential as ever.
Higuain’s five game-winning assists during the regular season helped him join other elite company, as he tied with former Crew SC players Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Simon Elliott and John Wilmar Perez for most game-winning assists in a single regular season. With 16 game-winning assists in regular-season action during his time in Columbus, Pipa is now tied with Robert Warzycha for most game-winning assists for the club.
On September 23, Higuain added to his legend by becoming one of only seven players in club history – and the first in nearly a decade – to register three assists in a single match, as he set up all three of Crew SC’s goals in the club’s 3-2 victory over the New York Red Bulls at MAPFRE Stadium.
In 2017, Crew SC had an undefeated record of 9-0-1 across all MLS competitions when Higuain provided one or more assists.
