Crew sign French midfielder Léandre Griffit

The Columbus Crew have finally inked midfielder Léandre Griffit following a lengthy trial.

The club announced on Friday the signing of the 25-year-old Frenchman, who first joined Columbus in April after an unsuccessful trial with the Houston Dynamo during preseason. He tallied a goal and an assist for the Crew in a scrimmage on April 2.

“Leandre is a player who has some qualities that we were looking for,” Crew head coach Robert Warzycha said in a statement. “He brings something different to our team, along with the experiences and perspective of someone who has played overseas for a number of different clubs in different countries.”

Griffit most recently played for England's Crystal Palace, earning five games for the London-based Championship side. He's also had stints at Sweden's IFK Norrköping and IF Elfsborg, with whom he won a league championship and participated in Champions League qualifiers, as well as at Southampton, Leeds United and Rotherham in the English Football League.

A native of Maubeuge, France, Griffit began his professional career with Racing Club de Lens' youth team.
