Black & Gold by the Numbers: Clark ties Gruenebaum

Crew SC and Toronto FC met for the first of three matches in the 2016 Trillium Cup. The Black & Gold put up a solid performance on defense in the 0-0 draw north of the border. Here’s a breakdown of the action by the numbers.

Crew SC earned its third straight point on Saturday night after previously drawing with the Montreal Impact (4-4) and Colorado Rapids (1-1). The Black & Gold also earned their third shutout of the season as they recorded three blocks and 19 clearances. They won 40 duels and 16 tackles in a hard-fought draw with Toronto.

Crew SC fired 15 shots at BMO Field, five of which went on target. Midfielders Justin Meram and Federico Higuain led the charge with four shots each.

Steve Clark recorded the 17th shutout of his MLS career. The goalkeeper made two saves on Sebastian Giovinco to keep the MLS MVP off the score sheet and secure a valuable road point for the Black & Gold.

Rodrigo Saravia played 55 minutes at center back after coming on for Gaston Sauro, who exited the match with a left knee injury. It was Saravia's first professional appearance at the position and the rookie delivered a convincing performance next to captain Michael Parkhurst.

Clark started his 79th regular season match for Crew SC. That ties him with Andy Gruenebaum for third in all-time Columbus goalkeeper starts.

The Black & Gold played more than 500 passes on Saturday night at an accuracy rate of 83%. Columbus continues to lead the League in that category.
