2019 (Columbus/Indy Eleven): Alex Crognale has made 12 regular-season appearances (nine starts at centerback) in 2019, providing one assist. On March 15, he was sent on loan to the Indy Eleven of the USL. He made six regular-season appearances (all starts) with the Indy Eleven playing every minute of every match. He made his 2019 regular-season debut in a home match against Sporting Kansas City (June 23). Following his 2019 regular-season debut, Crognale made back to back starts for the Black & Gold on June 29 (Orlando City SC) and July 3 (Real Salt Lake).He made a substitute appearance during a home contest against the Seattle Sounders coming into the match for Josh Williams in the 63rd minute. He started for Crew SC during a road contest against the Chicago Fire (July 17). Crognale made a substitute appearance during a home contest against the Montreal Impact (July 20) coming into the match for Josh Williams. He made two consecutive starts for the Black & Gold starting on July 27 (NYRB). Crognale returned to the starting lineup during a road contest against New York City FC (August 21). He made a substitute appearance during a road contest at FC Cincinnati (August 25) coming into the match for Josh Williams playing 10 minutes. Crognale started during a home contest against the Chicago Fire (August 31) playing the entire 90 minutes.
Crognale made two appearances (two starts) in the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (June 11) and Atlanta United (June 18).
2018 (Columbus/ Orange County SC): Alex Crognale has made five regular-season appearances (all substitute appearances). He played two minutes in the first match of the season on the road against Toronto FC (March 3), coming on as a late-match substitute for Federico Higuain, and he played eight minutes in a home match against the Montreal Impact (March 10), after coming on for Pedro Santos. Crognale did not make an appearance against the Philadelphia Union (March 17) after being sent on loan to Orange County SC of the USL on March 15. He returned to Crew SC and came in as a substitute for Cristian Martinez in a road match against Seattle Sounders FC (May 5) and in a home match against the Philadelphia Union (May 9). Crognale returned to action for Crew SC in a home match against Toronto FC (June 2), coming on as a substitute for Lalas Abubakar and scoring his first career goal with the club. Crognale has made 24 appearances (23 starts) for Orange County SC. He scored a goal in his debut with Orange County SC against Phoenix Rising FC (March 17). He started in six consecutive matches for Orange County SC from a match against Sacramento Republic (March 24) to a match against the Colorado Springs Switchbacks (April 28). He started and helped Orange County SC record a shutout against Fresno FC (May 26). Crognale returned to the starting lineup in a match against the Tulsa Roughbacks (June 23) and scored a goal. He started in three consecutive matches against Phoenix Rising (June 29), Colorado Springs (July 3) and the LA Galaxy II (July 7). Crognale started in a matches against the Swope Park Rangers (August 4), Phoenix Rising FC (August 11), Las Vegas Lights FC (August 15) and the Portland Timbers 2 (August 22). He scored a goal in the match 57th-minute of the match against Seattle Sounders 2 (September 2). Crognale started in matches against OKC Energy (September 8), Fresno FC (September 16), Real Monarchs SLC (September 19), Las Vegas Lights FC (September 26), Sounders FC 2 (October 6), Reno 1868 (October 13), Saint Louis FC (October 20), Reno 1868 FC (Ocotber 27) and Phoenix Rising FC (November 3). He made one appearance (one start as a central defender) in a 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Fourth Round home match against the Chicago Fire (June 6).
2017 (Columbus): Crognale made 17 appearances (12 starts) this season, all at centerback and recorded one assist. He made his regular-season MLS debut as a starter at centerback on the road at D.C. United (March 18), earning MLSSoccer.com’s Team of the Week honors for his efforts and being voted the club’s Man of the Match by Crew SC fans while helping the team to a clean sheet. He started against Orlando City SC (April 1) and helped the team to its third win and second shut-out of the season. As a result of his strong performance, he was named to MLSSoccer.com’s Team of the Week. Crognale recorded his first career MLS assist against Toronto FC (April 15). He started in an international friendly match at home against Eintracht Frankfurt (July 14). Crognale underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia in October and subsequently missed Crew SC’s matches for the remainder of the 2018 campaign.
COLLEGE EXPERIENCE
A defender, Crognale played four seasons at the University of Maryland, making 73 appearances (69 starts) with 11 goals and three assists. In 2016, Crognale captained the Terrapins to a third straight Big Ten tourney title en route to being named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. He was also chosen for the First-Team All-American. Crognale and the First Team All-Big Ten. Crognale was a Second Team All-Big Ten selection in 2015. In July of 2015, Crognale was called up to the U.S. Soccer Under 23 College ID Camp.
YOUTH EXPERIENCE
Crognale spent four years in the Crew SC Academy, from 2010 to 2013. As a member of the Crew SC Academy U-19 team, Crognale won the Ohio South State Cup back-to-back in 2012 and 2013. He has played in several reserve matches for Crew SC, including a full 90 minutes against DC United in 2012.
INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
In July of 2015, Crognale was called up to the U.S. Soccer Under 23 College ID Camp.
Crognale was signed as a Homegrown Player on December 20, 2016.
PERSONAL
Crognale is the son of Corey and Karen. He has two brothers, Ben and Eli, who also went through Crew SC Academy. Crognale acquried a dog, a Bernedoodle. Growing up he looked up to former Crew SC captain Chad Marshall and his room was decorated in black and gold. He does not play video games. Growing up he played alongside Wil Trapp and Ben Swanson. While at the University of Maryland, he played with current Crew SC goalkeeper Zack Steffen for two years.He majored in economics at the University of Maryland and if he weren't a soccer player, he would like to go into business.
