2017 (Columbus): Maloney made two appearances (one start) this season: one substitute appearance as a rightback and one start as a right wingback, recording one assist. He made his regular-season team debut at the Houston Dynamo (March 11), coming on in the second half as a substitute. Maloney missed a road contest against the New York Red Bulls (April 22) and a home match against New York City FC (April 29) after being listed as out those weeks with a concussion. Maloney made his first MLS regular season start and registered his first MLS assist for Crew SC in a road match against Real Salt Lake (July 29). Maloney underwent a left knee meniscectomy and subsequently missed Crew SC’s road match against New York City FC (October 22). Maloney did not make an appearance in the Audi 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs. He missed the matches against Atlanta United FC (October 26), New York City FC (October 31), New York City FC (November 5) and Toronto FC (November 21) after being listed as out following a left knee meniscectomy. While on loan with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, he made two appearances (one start). He started in a home contest against Louisville City FC (May 21) and made a substitute appearance in a road contest against the Harrisburg City Islanders (May 24). Maloney made a substitute appearance in an international friendly match at home against Eintracht Frankfurt (July 14).
Maloney played four seasons at Pennsylvania State University, making 73 appearances (73 starts), scoring 26 goals and recording 17 assists during his time there. The forward’s senior season saw him lead the team in both goals and assists (7 goals, 5 assists) en route to winning NSCAA Second Team All-Great Lakes Region and First Teamhonors (2016). The three-time First Team All-Big Ten Conference player (2016, 2015, 2014) was named the Big Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Year during his sophomore season (2014), a season in which he scored ten goals and contributed with three assists. During his freshman year at the Pennsylvania State University, Maloney scored two goals and provided seven assists, earning Big Ten Conference All-Freshman Team honors.
