Crew News & Notes

After earning yet another dramatic win in the final moments of last Saturday’s (May 15) match against Chivas USA, the still-unbeaten Crew faces a pair of matches this week as it travels to New York Thursday (May 20) to face the Red Bulls in brand-new Red Bull Arena before continuing on to Kansas City for a Sunday (May 23) afternoon match against the Wizards at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

Thursday’s MLS Game of the Week, which kicks off at 8 p.m., will be televised live nationally on ESPN2 with JP Dellacamera and John Harkes on the call. The battle for first place in the Eastern Conference can also be heard in English on News/Talk 610 WTVN with Neil Sika behind the microphone. The Crew (4-0-2, 14 pts.) trails New York (5-3-0, 15 pts.) by just one point with two games in hand.

New York enters the match after falling to Seattle, 1-0, last Saturday (May 15) at Red Bull Arena, thanks to a goal from Sounders FC in the match’s last minutes. New York is led by Colombian striker Juan Pablo Angel, who paces the club with four goals this season. New York also participated in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifying match last Thursday (May 13) and defeated the New England Revolution, 3-0, thanks to two goals by John Wolyniec and a strike from Sinisa Ubiparipovic.

Sunday’s match in Kansas City, which kicks off at 4 p.m. (ET), will be televised live regionally on ONN-TV with Dwight Burgess and Dante Washington on the call. The game can also be heard in English on News/Talk 610 WTVN with Neil Sika behind the microphone, as well as in Spanish on La Mega 103.1-FM, featuring Carlos Cordova and Benny Pietrangelo on the call.

Kansas City, which is currently tied for fifth place in the Eastern Conference with a 2-3-2 record (8 pts.), enters the match after drawing with the Chicago Fire, 2-2, last Saturday (May 15) at CommunityAmerica Ballpark thanks to two second-half goals from Kei Kamara. Kamara leads the Wizards in goals this season with five tallies to his credit, while Josh Wolff and Teal Bunbury share the team lead in assists with one apiece.

The Crew enters its pair of matches this week on the heels of a thrilling 1-0 victory over Chivas USA last Saturday (May 15), thanks to a penalty kick from Guillermo Barros Schelotto in the match’s waning moments. After a Chivas USA foul on the right side, 40 yards from goal, Schelotto sent a lofted free kick to the back post of goal. Chivas forward Justin Braun took down Crew defender Chad Marshall as Marshall skied for the header, drawing a penalty call from referee Jeff Gontarek. Schelotto’s ensuing penalty kick was blasted past goalkeeper Zach Thornton for his fourth goal of the season.
