Crew News & Notes - July 28

After an impressive home win over the Houston Dynamo last Saturday (July 24), the first-place Crew travels to Los Angeles for an encounter with Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center this Saturday (July 31). It will be the second and final time the clubs will meet this year, with the Crew having taken the first game, 1-0 on May 15 at Crew Stadium.

Saturday’s match, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m., will be televised live regionally on ONN-TV with Dwight Burgess and Dante Washington calling all the action. The game can also be heard in English on News/Talk 610 WTVN, with Neil Sika behind the microphone, as well as in Spanish on La Mega 103.1-FM, featuring Carlos Cordova and Benny Pietrangelo on the call.

Chivas, which currently sits in eighth place in the Western Conference with a 4-9-3 record (15 pts.), enters the match on the heels of an impressive 1-1 draw at Real Salt Lake on Saturday (July 24). Jesus Padilla’s 70th-minute goal equalized just four minutes after RSL’s Ned Grabavoy opened the scoring. That game followed three straight SuperLiga matches, including a 1-0 win over fabled Mexican club Pachuca.

The Crew, which remains in first place in the Eastern Conference with a 10-3-4 record (34 pts.), enters the match after earning a decisive 3-0 victory over Houston, extending the Black & Gold’s lead over idle New York to eight points in the Eastern Conference. Emilio Renteria, Andy Iro and Leandre Griffit scored the goals and William Hesmer was forced to make just one save in recording the shutout.

Griffit latched onto the rebound of a Guillermo Barros Schelotto shot in the 90th minute, evaded a defender and hammered the ball into the back of the net to put the finishing touches on a 3-0 Crew victory. It tied a league record for fastest goal upon entering one’s first regular-season match. Griffit had made his first competitive appearance in Black & Gold on July 6, in the Crew’s 3-0 U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal victory over Charleston, coming off the bench in the 76th minute.

After coming on in the 57th minute for the injured Brian Carroll in the July 17 game vs. the Red Bulls, Francis went the full 90 minutes vs. Houston. The Jamaican’s back-to-back league appearances come on the heels of starting assignments in U.S. Open Cup victories over Rochester and Charleston in recent weeks. Francis is in his first professional season, following a three-year collegiate career at Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) during which he captained the Blue Raiders to the 2009 NAIA National Championship.
