McBride has abused even MLS' best 'keepers

There are five storied goalkeepers in Major League Soccer history who have reached the 100-win plateau, and Brian McBride has scored on all of them.

In fact, when McBride announced Friday that he would retire after this season, he had scored on 34 different MLS goalkeepers during league play dating back to MLS' inaugural 1996 season.

McBride has victimized Nick Rimando the most, scoring five times on the Real Salt Lake veteran since he debuted in 2000 with the Miami Fusion. McBride scored on Rimando at D.C. United, too, long before Rimando reached the 100-win mark earlier this season with the defending champs. The two will meet again on Sept. 18 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Naturally, McBride has scored more goals (13) against D.C. United than any other club. The two franchises met regularly during the league’s early days in the late 1990s, when McBride played for the Crew and lobbied for Eastern Conference bluster against Bruce Arena’s juggernaut. McBride has scored on seven different DC goalkeepers in his career.

He has also scored on Kevin Hartman, Zach Thornton, Joe Cannon and Scott Garlick, the other four MLS goalkeepers who have reached the 100-win plateau. He has scored on Hartman wherever he went (Los Angeles, Kansas City and FC Dallas), on Garlick with both DC and Tampa Bay, and on Houston veteran Pat Onstad with San Jose and the Dynamo.

McBride also scored on three players with World Cup experience on their resumes: Jorge Campos, Tony Meola and a young Tim Howard. He’ll look to make it four when the Fire take on Kasey Keller and the Seattle Sounders on Sept. 25.
