Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber announced today that he has suspended and fined Columbus Crew player Josh Williams for violating the MLS Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health (SABH) Policy by testing positive for methandienone metabolites, a prohibited performance-enhancing substance.
The player is suspended for 10 MLS games, effective immediately, and has been fined 10 percent of his annual salary. During the suspension, the player may not participate in any other competitions.
The player purchased and ingested an over-the-counter nutritional supplement containing the banned substance. The supplement was purchased from a vitamin store that is part of a national chain.
“There is no place in sport for performance-enhancing drugs,” Garber said. “We continue to hold our players responsible and accountable for everything they ingest in order to ensure the integrity of our competition.”
