The jockeying atop the Power Rankings keeps getting better and
better. After a brief, one-week stint at No. 1, FC Dallas dropped back a
spot on the heels of a loss at Real Salt Lake, while both RSL and the
Seattle Sounders kept pace with the best in the league.

They showed depth and toughness all over the pitch, which is
important with a loaded schedule (USOC, CONCACAF Champions League, World
Football Challenge) coming up over the next couple of months. Gotta
wonder if there’s room for another forward, though — the
Ángel/Barrett/López threesome have scored just eight times all year.

George John chose a bad time to lay an egg. With d-mid Daniel
Hernandez getting a rest, the big man needed to be a leader; instead he
had several unfortunate giveaways and perhaps his worst game in months.
RSL punished them, but the good news for FCD is they have a chance for
revenge in the USOC this week.

Remember at the start of the year when some Seattle fans were
wondering if the league had passed Sigi Schmid by? Emphatically,
undeniable foolish speculation on their part. He’s got his team closer
to football d’arte than anyone in the league, with speculation that there’s another big, classy attacker on the way.

Welcome back! Yeah, RSL were going up against something less than a
full-strength FCD, but they did what a good team should do: Find the
weak points and go right at them. The only blemish was Álvaro Saborío
throwing a sulk when he was subbed off at the end. It’ll be interesting
to see what, if anything, comes of that.

It’s officially halfway through the season and the Union still can’t
put together consistent offense. This time they made a go of it without
new signing Veljko Paunovic and old hand Carlos Ruiz, and generally
created enough chances to find net, but were stymied repeatedly by poor
touches in the final third.

The midweek thumping of Toronto was more than counterbalanced by
the listless home loss against DC. The lack of creativity in the central

It took a penalty save and a last-minute goal to seal a 1-0 win at
Vancouver, but three points on the road is a plus no matter how you
