Crew Signs Defender Drew Beckie

COLUMBUS — The Columbus Crew has signed defender Drew Beckie, the club announced on Friday. The Black & Gold selected the Regina, Saskatchewan native 28th overall in the second round of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft in Indianapolis on January 17. Per Major League Soccer and club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

“Drew has proven himself to be a hard-working addition to our team throughout preseason training camp,” said Crew Technical Director Brian Bliss. “He’s a coachable player that provides depth a multiple positions across our backline, and we’re excited to have completed his signing.”

Beckie joins the Crew from the University of Denver, where he played in 78 games over four years. As a defender, Beckie recorded seven goals and six assists in his college career. Internationally, Beckie has represented Canada at the U-17, U-20 and U-23 levels. Most recently, he represented Canada in its 2012 Olympic qualifying effort.

Beckie has played in all five of the Crew’s matches thus far in 2013 preseason training and is currently with the club in Orlando, Fla. for the Disney Pro Soccer Classic. The Black & Gold face Orlando City on Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. ET at Disney’s Wide World of Sports, with the match being streamed live via TheCrew.com/Preseason.
