Black & Gold Bullets: October 14

Episode 13 of MLS Insider aired this past Friday and along with it – a segment featuring Crew captain Federico Higuain. A few weeks ago, the Insider team spent time with Pipa and talked with him about his move to Columbus as well as his love for the Rolling Stones. Watch Higuain open up on his “affection for the [Crew] and city” of Columbus on this week’s edition that aired on NBC Sports Network.

With Week 33 of MLS play in the books and the bye week behind them, the Black & Gold remain statistically alive in the Eastern Conference playoff hunt. The team currently sits in eighth place in the East with 41 points – five points back of the Chicago Fire for the fifth and final playoff spot. While a road win for the Crew in New England is a must this Saturday, The Columbus Dispatch’s Adam Jardy breaks down what else needs to happen around the League in order for the Crew to stay alive moving forward.

On Friday night, the U.S. Men’s National Team overcame a lackluster first half of play to defeat Jamaica 2-0 at Sporting Park for their second consecutive two-goal victory. Paced by second half goals from substitute Graham Zusi and forward Jozy Altidore, the U.S. was able to clinch top honors in the Hexagonal Round (CONCACAF group) of 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying for the third consecutive time. Franco Panizo and Dan Karell of Soccer By Ives, recap the USMNT victory ahead of Tuesday’s World Cup qualifying finale on the road in Panama.

Finally, the New York Daily News reports that Major League Soccer is "inching closer to a European-like schedule" as soon as the 2014 season. FIFA President Sepp Blatter believes the switch “Would be better for U.S. soccer, and specifically also for the (United States)national team... And the popularity inside the country.”
