Ahead of next week's 2015 MLS SuperDraft, presented by adidas in Philadelphia, ColumbusCrewSC.com takes a look at some of the prospects that may address Crew SC's needs with the 14th overall selection. The series begins with Marquette University defender Axel Sjöberg.
Much like the 2014 SuperDraft, Crew SC Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter will have his selection of players to address a multitude of the Black & Gold's needs with the 14th pick in the First Round this year. With the offseason departures of Eric Gehrig, Josh Williams and Matt Wiet, one of the biggest areas that Berhalter could address via the SuperDraft is centerback depth. Currently the Crew SC roster has three true centerbacks under contract ahead of the 2015 season: Michael Parkhurst, Emanuel Pogatetz and Tyson Wahl.
One player that could supply cover at centerback is Marquette University defender Axel Sjöberg. The durable central defender started every match for the Golden Eagles from 2012-2014, scoring 10 goals and adding nine assists in that time. Standing 6-foot-7, Sjöberg will provide a physical presence and aerial threat to any MLS team that takes him in the SuperDraft.
Given the European influence on Berhalter's possession-based system, the Swedish Sjöberg could be a selection that makes sense for the Black & Gold. However, Crew SC may take caution should Sjöberg take up a valuable international roster spot.
Regardless, the Swede has already proven he looks good in gold throughout his college career at Marquette. Check out his roster page on GoMarquette.com.
The 2015 MLS SuperDraft takes place January 15 in Philadelphia.
