Berhalter looks to add depth in 2015 SuperDraft

Gregg Berhalter

The 2015 adidas MLS Player Combine is complete and now the only question for Crew SC Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter is the talent left available for the Black & Gold with the 14th pick in Thursday's 2015 MLS SuperDraft in Philadelphia. After six days in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Berhalter and his staff are pleased with the players they observed at the combine.

"It’s been a great time for the staff to work together identifying and evaluating the players," Berhalter said upon departing Florida. "The college players have certainly put in a great effort. The level of play was pretty good."

With the core of last year's playoff squad intact, Crew SC will look to add depth via this year's SuperDraft. Some areas that could be addressed are depth at the centerback, central midfield and fullback positions.

"This is a conclusion of a long process mostly carried out by [Assistant Coach] Pat Onstad," Berhalter explained. "The combine is a culmination of us coming together and really studying these players and getting to see them up close. From what I’ve seen, it looks like we can add some depth."

Selecting 14th, Berhalter is more concerned with addressing the club's needs rather than going after the top talent available regardless of position in Thursday's draft.

"I think we’re clearly deep enough in some positions," he said. "We’re going to look to add depth in the positions we know that we need. With the 14th pick, hopefully we’ll be able to find someone."

The 2015 MLS SuperDraft presented by adidas kicks-off at 12:30 p.m. ET from Philadelphia. Fans can watch LIVE at ColumbusCrewSC.com/DraftCentral.
