Post-Match Quotes: Richmond Kickers vs. Crew SC

Hector Jimenez RICvCLB

SPORTING DIRECTOR AND HEAD COACH GREGG BERHALTER
On the performance tonight:
I think it was good. The guys worked extremely hard and they applied what we asked of them. They stayed concentrated, they stayed focused, they moved the ball quickly and it wasn’t easy against a well-organized opponent.
On what made the play from the wings so effective:
I think it was the quick ball movement to switch the field and open up the spaces, once we had the space on the side, we were taking advantage of that with the numbers that we were moving over to that space. Overall, I think it was pretty good.
On Hector Jimenez’s performance:
He did a good job and we asked a lot of him to get up and down. He still was able to do that getting to the attack, he had a couple of shots, some good crosses, so we’re pleased with that effort.
On seeing Adam Bedell scoring two goals:
It’s been good. Obviously, it is good to have guys getting the confidence of scoring goals. For Bedell, he had a good chance and he took it.
FORWARD ADAM BEDELL
On scoring two goals:
It was big for me, I haven’t seen any time this year with the first team. To get two goals in my first start, it was special. It’s just one game, you move onto the next one and you try to do it again.
On his first goal:
Once the ball gets wide, my first thing is to make a good run whether it is near post or far post. I was the first guy, so I shot in front of their weak-sided centerback, I got behind their strong-sided centerback and the ball was perfect from Ben Speas, it doesn’t get any better. It makes my job a whole lot easier when the service is that good, so I just find the back of the net.
On his second goal:
We possessed the ball really well the whole game. We really pinned them back and that was a result of our buildup. When Tony [Tchani] played me the ball, I got turned and no one stepped to me, so it was just instinct to try to find the far post and I did.
On what this game does for team confidence moving forward:
Obviously, we don’t have a game this weekend, but we have to use this for momentum going into MLS. Hopefully in our next game, we can get a win against New England, obviously for the Open Cup, it is a big tournament, and obviously we want to win this too. This is momentum and we have to use it.
MIDFIELDER HECTOR JIMENEZ
On what made Crew SC so effective:
I think it was the system that we were playing. We played five in the middle and one of the big keys for us to come out was to progress that wing play and I thought we did well. Chad [Barson] in particular in that first half, I think we had maybe eight or nine crosses from the right side and part of that was moving the ball from side to side. Thankfully we got the result today and we get to move on.
On what made the midfield so important:
We talked about it prior to coming here. With five guys in the midfield, it was key that we move the ball around. There were the triangles in there, good combinations and most importantly, we were patient with it. There were times there in the first half that we were really patient, We were able to get some good plays and some good open looks.
On what made this particular lineup so effective:

To be honest with you, we were coming here to get the [win], and I think everyone had that mentality. At the end of the day, it wasn’t easy, it was a team that took us a little bit to break down, but like I said, it was huge for us to get that first goal. Once we got that first goal, it opened up for us and after that it was a lot easier for us.
On getting the road win:
This is our first road win this year, so hopefully we can carry that momentum into our next away game, which is at [Real] Salt Lake. Hopefully, we can carry onto that and get a [win] before that on Wednesday, hopefully this win just keeps us on that winning streak.
