Michael Parkhurst: A Finlay by Irish heritage

Michael Parkhurst preseason 1-24-16

This St. Patrick’s Day we wanted to share a fun little fact with you. Did you know that Crew SC Captain and MLS veteran
Michael Parkhurst
is the one true Irishman on the team? That's right, Michael is a citizen of both the United States and Ireland.
Michael's father, Charles Michael Finlay, was born in County Monaghan, Ireland. Charles’ parents died at a young age and he was adopted by the Parkhurst family in Rhode Island, who were related by marriage to Charles' mother. After being adopted, Charles took the name Michael Parkhurst and passed it onto his son, who you know as Crew SC's No. 4.
A Finlay by Irish heritage, the name has stayed within the Parkhurst family. It's Michael's middle name and the Crew SC defender has passed it on to his son, as well.
“It’s a family name and we really like the name,” Parkhurst says.
Michael has visited Ireland a couple times, but hasn’t been back since high school. He says he "would like to get back there someday." Until that day comes, Parkhurst says, his family may adopt some Americanized Irish traditions for his kids to enjoy. Green eggs and ham, coming in hot!
