Q: Abuchi, you’re originally from Columbus and now you've signed a professional contract with Crew SC, your first MLS club. How much are you looking forward to this next step in your young playing career?

ABUCHI OBINWA: I’m looking very forward to it. It’s going to be the next stage in my development because I’m only 20. I’m just looking to train hard every day, learn from all the guys and work as hard as I can with the coach.

Q: Do you feel any strong ties to Columbus, having been born here?

AO: Yes, because when I was born here, I also spent a little bit of time here, in school, in kindergarten, so I remember the school where I was from and the elementary school I went to, so I feel like this is also my second home.

Q: You began your professional career signing with Hannover 96 at just 17 years old. What have the last few years been like for you?

AO: It was very tough learning a new language, but also very rewarding learning the different styles of play in Germany and also learning how my position plays compared to here and also when I moved overseas.

Q: How have you seen your game develop?

AO: I’ve seen my game develop very well. Focus is probably the biggest thing for me. Just to make sure I stay concentrated and stay focused on every single pass because that’s what I feel is my weakest point.

Q: What was it like playing overseas?/ Do you think that helped develop your game?

AO: I think it was very good to see the age and the level that they were at, at Paris Saint-Germain, so I think it was a big stepping stone to see where I need to be to compete at the highest level.

Q: How do you think your playing style fits into Crew SC’s system?

AO: I think it fits very well because I play defensive mid, and in this system, the defensive mid often drops in between the centerbacks. And I think my team in Germany played the same way, so I think it’ll fit perfectly.

Q: What kind of expectations has Gregg laid out for you?

AO: He just expects me to not think of this as only development—think of it as I want to fight for minutes. That will truly help my development. So just fight as hard as I can. Don’t think I can’t get into the 18—if I play my hardest and if I play better than other players in my position, then maybe I can get a chance.

Q: What would you like to accomplish in your first season with your first MLS team?

AO: Make my debut and get my first start.

Q: What sets you apart from other 20-year-old midfielders in the League?

AO: I would say my defensive work and the amount of ground I can cover, the whole 90 minutes and my physical attributes I think set me apart.

Q: What do you think will be the biggest challenge?

AO: The biggest challenge for me will be competing with other top players in my position, because there’s also the likes of Wil Trapp and Tony Tchani, so I think competition will be the biggest challenge.

Q: How much are you looking forward to being reunited with U.S. Youth National teammate Ben Swanson?

AO: It’s great. We played with each other, against each other, since we were 13 and I know him really well. We know each other’s playing styles, so I think it will be very productive for us to play and train together every day of the week.
