Crew SC midfielder Cristian Martinez started and played 72 minutes of Panama's, 1-0, victory over the United States on Saturday at Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in Tibas, Costa Rica at the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship.
Panama claimed the win in Group B's opening match despite playing down a man after Panama’s Justin Simons straight red card for a late challenge on Tyler Adams in the 18th minute. The difference was Leandro Ávila’s deflected effort in the 37th minute.
In Group B's other match, Haiti won, 5-1, over Saint Kitts and Nevis. Panama next faces Saint Kitts and Nevis on Monday at 3 p.m. ET.
- The top two teams in each group will advance to the classification stage, which will consist of two groups of three and run from Feb. 27-March 3. The top two teams in each of those groups will qualify for the 2017 FIFA Under-20 World Cup while the top team in each group will contest the final on March 5. See below for tiebreakers, which will come into effect should two teams finish level on points.
