MATCH NOTES: #MTLvCLB | May 13, 2017

Columbus Crew SC travel north of the border for a quick turnaround to take on the Montreal Impact on Saturday, May 13 for a 5 p.m. ET kickoff at Stade Saputo. It will be the Eastern Conference clubs’ first of two meetings this season, and 15th overall. The Black & Gold currently hold a 6-5-3 all-time regular-season record over Montreal.

FEDERICO HIGUAIN SCORES 43RD GOAL


On Wednesday, the Black & Gold hosted Toronto FC at MAPFRE Stadium. Midfielder Federico Higuain put Crew SC ahead a er converting a penalty kick in the 29th minute. It was Higuain’s 43rd regular-season goal with the Black & Gold and his fourth goal of the season. Tosaint Ricketts scored in the 81st minute and the 90th minute for Toronto FC to give the visitors a 2-1 win. Defenders Waylon Francis and Hector Jimenez each made their 75th appearances for the club, with Francis starting the match and Jimenez coming on as a substitute in the 66th minute.

CREW SC FACES MONTREAL FOR THE 1ST OF 2 MATCHES


This weekend’s match marks the 15th all-time regular-season meeting between the two clubs, with the Black & Gold holding a 6-5-3 record against Montreal. is match will also be the first of two meetings between the clubs in 2017. The second match of the series will take place on June 24 at MAPFRE Stadium.


LAST REGULAR-SEASON MEETING


On June 18, 2016, Crew SC hosted the Montreal Impact at MAPFRE Stadium for their third meeting of the season. The two teams played to a 0-0 draw, helping Crew SC extended its (at the time) unbeaten streak at home in regular-season play to six, extending back to April 16 against New York City FC.

DUO REACH MILESTONE APPEARANCES


A pair of Crew SC players made milestone appearances for the club in Wednesday night’s match against Toronto FC: Waylon Francis made his 75th appearance (68th start) for the Black & Gold while playing the entire 90 minutes while Hector Jimenez also made his 75th appearance for the Black & Gold, coming on as a substitute for Josh Williams in the 66th minute.


IRON MAN: ZACK STEFFEN


Through 11 regular-season matches this year, one player leads the club when it comes to minutes played: Zack Steffen. The goalkeeper has played 990 minutes to date, playing every minute of every match for the club in the 2017 MLS season.


HIGUAIN SCORES IN 3RD CONSECUTIVE MATCH…


Midfielder Federico Higuain tallied his fourth goal of the season and his third goal in as many matches by scoring for the Black & Gold in Wednesday’s match. He had previously scored at home against New York City FC (March 29) and the New England Revolution (May 6). With four goals and four assists through 10 matches this season, Higuain has already surpassed his 2016 assist total (three) while matching his goal output of last year (four).


…4TH PLACE ON CREW SC’S ALL-TIME REGULAR-SEASON SCORING LIST


Federico Higuain scored his 43rd regular-season goal for Crew SC in Wednesday night’s match, passing Edson Buddle to take sole possession of the fourth spot on Crew SC’s all-time regular-season goal scorers list. Since joining the club in 2012, Higuain has made 133 regular-season appearances (128 starts) for the Black & Gold, recording 43 goals and 39 assists. Higuain is behind Jeff Cunningham (64 goals), Brian McBride (62 goals) and Jon Stern (44 goals).


HIGUAIN LEADS ALL-TIME PENALTY KICK GOALS


With his goal from the penalty spot against Toronto FC, Federico Higuain extended his lead at the top of the club’s all-time penalty kick goals list with his 16th MLS career penalty kick goal. Higuain is now 16-for-22 from the penalty spot in the regular-season and three goals ahead of Guillermo Barros Schelotto, who sits in second place. 


HIGUAIN ON VERGE OF 40/40 CLUB…


Federico Higuain — who scored his fourth goal of the season in Wednesday’s contest against the New England Revolution — is on the verge of becoming one of only three players in Crew SC history to have recorded at least 40 goals and 40 assists or more for the club. To date, only two other players have achieved this feat: Jeff Cunningham (64 goals, 44 assists) and Brian McBride (41 goals, 39 assists). Since joining the club in 2012, Higuain has made 132 regular-season appearances (127 starts) for the Black & Gold, recording 42 goals and 39 assists.


…MERAM ON WAY TO 30/30 CLUB


Justin Meram is now on the cusp of joining the 30/30 Club. With 28 goals and 30 assists in 165 appearances (113 starts), Meram needs only two more goals to become one of only six Crew SC players to have registered at least 30 goals and 30 assists in the regular season for the club.  In the 2017 MLS season, Meram has made 11 appearances (all starts) recording four goals and four assists.


STEFFEN MAKES 1ST CAREER PENALTY KICK SAVE


Goalkeeper Zack Steffen recorded his first MLS career penalty kick save in Wednesday night’s match against Toronto FC, saving Jozy Altidore’s attempt from the penalty spot in the 38th minute.  Additionally, the save on Altidore’s attempt was Steffen’s 34th stop of the season, which puts him in third place when it comes to saves amongst all goalkeepers in the League, per Opta.


GOALS: BY THE NUMBERS


Through the first 11 matches of the 2017 MLS season, the Black & Gold have scored a total of 16 goals. So far, Crew SC’s 16 goals have come from five different players: Ola Kamara (6), Justin Meram (4), Federico Higuain (4), Ethan Finlay (1) and Niko Hansen (1). Of those 15 goals, 11 have been scored with the right foot, four have been scored with the left foot and one has been a header. Three of the goals have come via penalty kick, two against D.C. United (March 18) and one against Toronto FC (May 10).


INTERCEPTIONS: BY THE NUMBERS


Through 11 matches in the 2017 MLS season, the Black & Gold lead MLS in interceptions, with 164. Leading the way for Crew SC is defender Harrison Afful, with 19 interceptions in eight matches. He is trailed by Nicolai Naess, who has made 16 interceptions in 10 matches, while Captain Wil Trapp ranks third with 14 interceptions in 11 matches. Defender Jukka Raitala sits in fourth place with 13 interceptions in nine matches, followed by Artur, who has made 12 interceptions in nine matches.
