“Federico Higuain sending it in… Oh, it’s in the net! It’s in the net!"
Thus, Federico Higuain signed his name into the history books as Crew SC’s first player to record at least 50 goals and 50 assists in regular-season action, as well as one of only 19 players – at the time – in MLS history to achieve this feat.
Higuain – who was coming off a single-season career-best 14 assists in 2017 – had already notched two goals heading into the match against D.C. United, leaving him with 50 goals and 49 assists in 152 regular-season appearances (147 starts) for the Black & Gold.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the 40th minute, Higuain went to take a corner kick. The Argentine playmaker sent an in-swinger into D.C.’s box, which Ricardo Clark put away to give Crew SC a 2-1 lead.
Two minutes later, Higuain was notching his second assist of the evening, as he combined with Cristian Martinez to provide the helper on Pedro Santos’ 42nd-minute goal.
Notably, Higuain’s 40th-minute helper would prove to be the game-winning assist, bringing his Crew SC regular-season total to 17 game-winning helpers, allowing him to take sole possession of first place in the Black & Gold all-time game-winning assists chart.
Following the match, the Argentine had the following to say inside the locker room when asked his thoughts on joining the 50/50 Club:
“I’m happy. I’m proud to be a part of this team for the last few years.”
Us too, Pipa. Us too.
