If there was one thing we learned following Columbus Crew SC’s 1-1 draw to the New York Red Bulls, the post-match vibe in MAPFRE Stadium was not tied to the scoreline, players included.
Yes, a home victory would have been the ideal start to a preseason campaign that’s been unique in countless respects, but as special as it was to see Black and Gold on the pitch, that same sensation reciprocated from the field level to the stands.
“The feeling is something we cannot explain,” said Artur after the match. “Seeing everybody here, all the supporters – your heart beats faster and it is great. We just need to do our best to give back to them.”
The goal-scorer and MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week honoree Gaston Sauro also spoke on the support at MAPFRE Stadium.
“The atmosphere was amazing,” Sauro said. “First game at home after all that happened with the club. We know now that the Crew [will] stay here and everyone is so happy for that.”
Looking for the ideal gift, head coach Caleb Porter wished the end result would have included three points, but still gave a shout out to the supporters, as well as something to look forward to.
“It was a great crowd, the supporters were tremendous,” Porter said. “I wish we would have been able to give them three points, but we will, next time we’re at home, I’m confident that we will bring them the three points and, on the road, too starting next week.”
Up next, Columbus (0-0-1, 1 pt.) faces the New England Revolution (0-0-1, 1 pt.) on Saturday, March 9 at 2 p.m. ET in Foxboro, Mass. Supporters can watch the match on SportsTime Ohio, or listen on 97.1 FM The Fan (English) or www.ColumbusCrewSC.com (Spanish).
