Earlier this week, U.S. Soccer announced that ballots have been finalized for the National Soccer Hall of Fame Class of 2019 elections, with eight eligible nominees holding ties to Columbus Crew SC.
Gregg Berhalter, Edson Buddle, Jeff Cunningham, Frankie Hejduk, Pat Onstad, Tony Sanneh, and Josh Wolff were all nominated as Player Candidates, while Chris Henderson was nominated as a Veteran Candidate.*
Berhalter, who took over as head coach for the U.S. Men’s National Team following the 2018 MLS season, served as Head Coach and Sporting Director for the Black & Gold from 2013 to 2018. As a player for the U.S. Men's National Team, Berhalter totaled 44 caps, which included 14 World Cup qualifiers, and was a member of the 2002 and 2006 World Cup teams, along with the 1999 and 2003 Confederations Cup rosters.
As a forward, Buddle was drafted by the Crew in 2001 and played for the Club until 2005. In his time with the Black & Gold, he scored 42 goals and helped the team win the U.S. Open Cup in 2002. Buddle totaled 11 caps for the USMNT, earning two of them as a member of the 2010 World Cup roster.
Cunningham was a forward for the Club from 1998 to 2004 and in 2011. In his time with Crew SC, Cunningham scored 68 goals and was named to MLS Best XI in 2002, when he helped the Club win the U.S. Open Cup. Cunningham played in two World Cup qualifiers for the USMNT in 2005 and was a member of 2003 Confederations Cup roster.
Hejduk, the Club’s current Brand Ambassador, was a defender for Crew SC from 2003 to 2010, where he captained the Black & Gold on their MLS championship run in 2008 and the U.S. Open Cup runner-up showing in 2010. Hejduk, who totaled 85 caps for the USMNT, was also a member of the 1996 and 2002 World Cup Teams, along with the 1996 and 2000 Olympic games and the 1999 and 2003 Confederation Cups. Additionally, Hejduk was part of the U.S. side that won two Concacaf Gold Cups (2002, 2005).
Henderson was a midfielder for the Crew in 2005 and tallied two goals for the Club. Henderson totaled 79 caps for the USMNT and was a member of the 1990 World Cup team and the 1991 Concacaf Gold Cup-winning team.
Pat Onstad, the Club's current Technical Director, played in MLS as a goalkeeper from 2003 to 2011 and was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2003 and 2005. A three-time MLS Cup champion, Onstad was also twice named to MLS Best XI.
Sanneh was a defender for Crew SC in 2004 and recorded two goals for the Club. Sanneh, who totaled 43 caps for the USMNT, was a member of the 2002 World Cup Team, where he was only one of three players to play every minute in each of the MNT's five games that summer.
Wolff served as an assistant coach under Berhalter from 2013 to 2018. As a USMNT player, Wolff totaled 52 caps and was a member of the 2002 and 2006 World Cup teams, the 2002 Concacaf Gold Cup championship team, and the 2000 and 2005 Olympic rosters. Currently, Wolff is an assistant coach for the U.S. Men’s National Team.
