RECAP: Crew SC lose 1-0 to Sporting KC

Columbus Crew SC fell to Sporting Kansas City 1-0 on Sunday, June 23 at MAPFRE Stadium. 

RECAP: Crew SC lose 1-0 to Sporting KC  -

The first half provided the Black & Gold with multiple opportunities including a finish from forward Patrick Mullins that sailed just over the net in the 20th minute.

Midfielder Luis Argudo, who subbed on for David Accam in the 16th minute, nearly broke the draw in the 26th minute when he almost stole the ball for Kansas City goalkeeper, Tim Melia. 

In the 29th minute, midfielder Hector Jimenez drove a shot from inside the box that went just wide of the left post. 

Sporting KC opened the second half with a goal in the 48th minute when Felipe Gutierrez headed in a chip from Garso, who saved the ball from rolling out for a goal kick. 


Crew SC was forced to play down a player in the 76th minute when defender Harrison Afful was shown a red card for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity. 

Up next, Crew SC hosts Orlando City SC on Saturday, June 29 at MAPFRE Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET.

  • Defender Alex Crognale made his first regular-season start of 2019 for Crew SC during tonightā€™s home contest against Sporting Kansas City. Crognale recorded 48 touches, attempted 44 passes and finished with a passing percentage of 79.5 Since joining Major League Soccer in 2017, Crognale has made 23 regular-season appearances (12 starts), scoring one goal and providing one assist. He also started in and played all 90 minutes of two consecutive matches for Crew SC during the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

  • Waylon Francis returned to the pitch for the Black & Gold during tonightā€™s contest against Sporting Kansas City. The match marked the first regular-season start and appearance for Francis since, suffering a left thigh injury during home contest against the Los Angeles Galaxy (May 8). Francis played 60 minutes, recording 39 touches, completing 22 passes and a passing percentage of 68.2. To date, Francis has made 95 regular-season appearances (87 starts) since re-joining Crew SC ahead of the 2019 regular-season.

  • With his appearance in tonightā€™s contest, midfielder David Guzman recorded his 50th MLS regular-season appearance (44th start) scoring four goals and providing eight assists. Guzman played the entire 90 minutes, had one shot (one on goal), created one goal-scoring chance, registered 59 touches, made three tackles, attempted 46 passes and finished with a passing percentage of 84.8. Since joining Crew SC on May 8 of 2019, Guzman has recorded six regular-season appearances (five starts).

  • Midfielder Robinho has featured for Crew SC in every competitive match since the beginning of the 2019 season, the only player to do so for the Black & Gold. Robinho played 29 minutes, had one shot (one on target), had one tackle and two crosses and led the team with a passing percentage of 85.7. Robinho joined Crew SC ahead of the 2019 season and has made 17 appearances (12 starts) and provided two assists in regular-season action, while making two appearances (one start) in the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

  • With the 1-0 loss to Sporting Kansas City in tonightā€™s match, Crew SCā€™s 2019 regular-season record is now 5-10-2 (17 points).
