MLS UNITES | Players explain personal messages displayed on jerseys

During Saturday's match vs. FC Cincinnati, Crew players' jerseys featured a patch underneath the numbers on the back dedicated with a personal message of their choosing. A number of players explained their dedication choice.


Luis Diazwrote "Dra. Maria Sofia Soto Ramirez" in honor of a doctor from his hometown who is overseeing the COVID efforts at the hospital she works at.

Lucas Zelarayan's jersey featured the name "Pau Bauti" in honor of his son, who is an infant and has had to grow up during the pandemic.

Artur's wife, a nurse, was displayed on the back of his jersey, while Derrick Etienne Jr.'s jersey featured the name "Fritz Etienne," his grandfather, a Haitian immigrant who came to the U.S. with only $12 to his name, not speaking English and able to succeed in this country.

Chris Cadden dedicated his jersey message to his girlfriend's mother, who was diagnosed with cancer last March. Due to the pandemic, she has not been able to leave the house and she hasn’t been able to see her sons or family members for 15 weeks.

Captain Jonathan Mensahdedicated his jersey to his wife, Kay, who he has not been able to see since during the pandemic.
