Assistant Coach: Mike Matkovich

Mike Matkovich is in his first season as Assistant Coach for Columbus Crew SC, having joined the Club on January of this year. Matkovich brings over 30 years of coaching experience which includes working at the professional, international and youth level.

Matkovich – who holds a National “A” Coaching License – most recently worked as the Director of Operations and Coaching for the Chicago Fire Juniors Soccer Club from 2011-2018. While working with the Chicago Fire Juniors Soccer Club, Matkovich also served as the Head Coach of the Des Moines Menace of the Premier Development League from 2015-2016.

At the professional level, Matkovich has experience as assistant coach with the Chicago Fire (2009-2013), Chivas USA (2008-2009) and Toronto FC (2007-2008), while also spending seven years as the Head Coach of the Chicago Fire Reserves (2001-2007). Matkovich also has experience at the international level, having worked as the Head Coach of the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team from 2009-2011. Additionally, he worked as regional and national staff coach with the U-14 and U-15 levels from 1986-2008.

Matkovich founded the Chicago Magic Soccer Club in 1987, where he worked as the Director of Coaching and General Manager of for nearly two decades (1998-2008), During his time there, Matkovich oversaw club operations and finances as well as the players and coaching curriculum. While working for the Chicago Magic Soccer Club, Matkovich also served as an assistant coach for the Chicago Power of the National Professional Soccer League from 1990-1994.

Matkovich earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration in 1985 from Lewis University, where he also worked as an assistant coach from 1985-1986, as well as in 1989. He also has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physical Education from Illinois Benedictine College, which he earned in 1987.
