Columbus Crew held two community events on Monday, October 11, ahead of the U.S. Men’s National Team’s 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying match against Costa Rica on Wednesday, October 13 at Lower.com Field.
The first event was an interactive demo of Blind Soccer done in partnership with the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department as well as Ohio Blind Soccer. Ohio Blind Soccer is Ohio’s first Blind Soccer team and aims to help grow the sport at the grassroots and national level. This event featured Ohio Blind Soccer athletes sharing their stories and guests in attendance. Crew staff as well as Crew affiliate SuperKick were also invited to participate in a skills and drills session led by Ohio Blind Soccer.
The event took place at the Blackburn Community Center Mini-Pitch (263 Carpenter Street, Columbus, OH 43205) which was made possible through a partnership between the Columbus Crew Foundation, U.S. Soccer Foundation, and Columbus Recreation and Parks.
The second event was a community clean-up at Rhodes Park (1900 W. Broad Street, Columbus, OH 43223) spearheaded by the Crew and Columbus Recreation and Parks Department staff members. During the pandemic, local parks have seen increased foot traffic, resulting in a higher need for volunteers to help keep parks clean.
In the last three years, the Black & Gold have worked with the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department to do clean-ups in Schiller Park (2020) and in Goodale Park (2019).
