Crew Press Conference - Colorado by ColumbusCrew

Crew coach Robert Warzycha

On the three goal win and general impressions on the game

“The important thing is the win. I don’t care if it was 1-0, 2-0 or 4-1. A win is a win. It was good that [Heinemann] scored his first MLS goal today and that Mendoza finished twice. More than anything, though, we responded well after giving up a goal in the fifth minute and we scored two quick goals. Obviously the red card changed the game for Colorado, but in the locker room at halftime, we told the guys to score another quick one, which is what we did and then after the fourth goal it was all over.”

On having to chase games

“You don’t want to give up early goals it is not something we practice but it happens. It’s happened to us quite often but it showed the real character of this team how we are able to fight back. I think the goal was a wake-up call because we started a bit slow and after that we picked up the tempo and scored another two goals.”

On the psyche of the team after back-to-back wins

“More than anything it’s consistency. We had a good performance in Houston. We scored two goals and didn’t give up any. We had a good performance tonight against the current MLS champions, and to be able to score four goals and dominate the game is very encouraging going into July.”

On the added depth the draftees bring

“We drafted them to put them on the field. Obviously they are doing well enough to be on the field. It’s a new group that is fresh, very athletic and you see they blend very well into the team. They are very responsible and leave everything on the field. With the veterans that we have, they make a good mix.”

Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer

On Conor Casey’s foul

“I’ll probably be pretty sore tomorrow. I mean I thought it was a terrible, terrible play. I don’t know how it shows on the replay but it was one of the worst I have had in my career. I’m the last guy that’s going to take a dive or try and embellish anything.  When I get hit, I get hit and I’m down.  If not, I’ll pop up as quick as I can.”

On winning back-to-back games

“I think we are starting to become more consistent and I think we are finding a style of play and guys are putting the ball in the back of the net and that’s really the difference.”

Crew forward Andres Mendoza

On hitting his stride

“I think it’s the strength of the team. We worked all week to get the three points. It’s not just me, I’m happy I scored but it was all of us working together.”

On the possibility of scoring a hat trick

“Only if I had the chance. The important thing is that we scored and got the three points. I scored two but Eddie and Tommy scored too. I always start thinking about one then the second came.”

On getting subbed out towards the end

“I was beginning to cramp a little, and when you cramp you can get injuries. The coach saw that I was grabbing my leg and subbed me to make sure that I wouldn’t get injured.”

Colorado coach Gary Smith

On giving up so many goals and general impressions on the game

“I thought both of the (first half) goals from the Columbus point of view were well taken. It’s unusual that A) we concede many goals, and B) were as sloppy as we were for the goals that took Columbus into the lead. It’s five games we have been beaten this season, and we have fallen foul to some decisions. The third goal was another bad error on our part. The fourth goal was just salt in the wound, really. At that point I think it was always going to be a long way back and a tough road back, with just 10 actual players. The third goal so (early in) the half was an absolute killer blow, I have to say.”

Colorado defender Drew Moor

On surrendering the early 1-0 lead

“It was uncharacteristic turnovers in bad spots, where good players and good teams like Columbus are going to punish you, and that’s what they did tonight. Really, we caused our own problems especially on our first three goals.”

On the team’s mistakes

“Everybody sees the mistakes that we make and, like I said, you’re going to get punished for those mistakes and we did tonight. You want to put it behind you but you also want it to teach you a lesson. I think by the time it went 3-1, you’re asking yourself a lot of questions, and 4-1 was a little bit of a dagger. And I still think we showed a lot of character in moments like that not to go down by 5 or 6.

 On recovering from the loss

“You keep your head up and you move on, you put it behind you, and we got Houston next Sunday night.”
