The First Round of the men's NCAA soccer tournament was conducted yesterday, with five teams featuring CSA alums in action. Let's take a look and see how the Black & Gold across the nation did.
Akron vs. Ohio State
The Zips and the Buckeyes squared off yesterday in Columbus in what might have been the most dramatic match of the First Round. Ohio State won after 15 rounds of penalties (and a 1-1 draw in regulation). Kyle Culbertson scored Ohio State's goal in regulation, with Zach Mason netting the game-winning penalty. Tyler Kidwell and Hunter Robertson each played 110 minutes for the Buckeyes.
Andrew Souders notched one shot for Akron, playing the full 110 minutes.
Ohio State next plays top-seeded Notre Dame.
Xavier
The Muskeeters beat Monmouth by a 2-1 final in extra time. Will Walker tallied in the 15th minute to open the scoring for Xavier. Eric Osswald earned the win in goal as well. Matt Hill started the match for the Muskeeters, with Rhodes Moore entering as a substitute.
Xavier now advances to play fifth-seeded Indiana.
Wake Forest
The Demon Deacons fell to UMBC in a shootout by a 3-2 final after playing to a 0-0 score in regulation. John Schuman came on as a substitute, playing 17 minutes in the encounter.
Kentucky
The Wildcats lost 2-0 to Oakland in their First Round match-up. Noah Hutchins and Charlie Reymann were starters for Kentucky, with Andrew McKelvey serving as a substitute.
