Columbus Crew SC 3-2 win vs. Portland Timbers

It was a sweet return to MAPFRE Stadium for Crew SC. Not only did they net three goals against one of the top teams in the league, they also came from behind to defeat the previously unbeaten Portland Timbers.  Although Portland opened the scoring early in the 4th minute with a strong right hook by Dairon Asprilla, Crew SC answered with back-to-back goals of their own in the 11th and 19th minutes by midfielder Justin Meram and forward Ola Kamara. Portland’s Fanendo Adi managed to sneak one in the upper corner right before halftime, keeping the teams even.

The fairytale ending came in the 84th minute when MLS rookie Niko Hansen saved the day with his timely positioning and deadly accuracy for the game-winner.

New York Red Bulls 0-0 draw vs. Real Salt Lake

The Red Bulls were hoping to bounce back from last week’s loss against Seattle that broke their 18-match winning streak. Despite plenty of chances, neither team scored in the draw. RSL held their own despite the absence of over a dozen regular players via international duty and injuries, including starting goalkeeper Nick Rimando —who is with the US national team.

New England Revolution 5-2 win vs. Minnesota United FC

New England opened their home schedule in style with a 5-2 win over Minnesota United, their first victory of the 2017 MLS regular season. United was no match for the New England’s fearsome front three: Juan Agudelo, Kei Kamara, and Lee Nguyen. The Revs were hoping to improve on their records from last season, having only scored 44 goals — the second lowest total in the Eastern Conference. Their start to the 2017 hasn’t been ideal with losses in the first two matches, but this win over Minnesota could be the confidence boost the Revs were looking for.
