COLUMBUS – Columbus Crew 2 have signed defender Jacob Greene. The 20-year-old joins the Black & Gold for the 2024 MLS NEXT Pro season after most recently competing with D.C. United and USL Championship side Loudoun United FC.
“Jacob is a player with great experience, professionalism, and versatility and we are so excited to have him in Columbus,” said Columbus Crew 2 General Manager Corey Wray. “His experience in MLS and USL Championship will be a valuable asset to Crew 2 this season. We are eager to work with Jacob and help develop his skillset and style of play within the Black & Gold player pathway.”
On Nov. 25, 2020, he was signed as a Homegrown Player by D.C. United, becoming their 15th Homegrown Signing in club history. He made his MLS debut on April 19, 2022 in a 3-0 win over Flower City Union in the Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup. In 2023, Greene appeared in 11 MLS matches (five starts), logging 480 total minutes, and scored his first goal in the 95th minute for D.C. in a 3-0 win against Charlotte FC on April 29, after subbing into the match in the 87th minute. D.C. United announced on Sept. 5, Greene’s return to Loudoun United, via loan. The defender featured in one match for D.C. United's USL affiliate Loudoun United in 2023, playing 90 minutes and adding an assist against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Sept. 10.
Born in Crofton, Md., Greene joined the D.C. United Academy in 2014, competing at multiple age levels and registering 113 appearances (99 starts) and nine goals for the Academy. The defender inked his first professional contract in 2019, signing with D.C. United’s USL Championship side Loudoun United FC, for their inaugural season. Greene made his professional debut with Loudoun on July 29, 2019, in a 3-0 win over Louisville City FC. With the Pegasus in USL Championship from 2019 to 2022, Greene amassed 72 appearances, three goals, and one assist. Internationally, the 20-year-old represented the United States Youth National Team at the U-16 level in 2019 and at the U-20 level in 2021.
